Clarisse Gonzalvo

About

I obtained my Ph.D. in Economics at Hiroshima University last March 2023. Currently, I am an Assistant Professor at the College of Development Communication (DevCom), University of the Philippines Los Baños. In the broadest sense, my research interests revolve around the following themes: 1) farmer decision-making and behavior; 2) increasing the uptake of environmental conservation agriculture (ECA) in rural communities; and 3) the social impacts of biotech and organic farming.

My doctoral dissertation focused on farmer decision-making on the concept of coexistence, which is a comparative analysis between organic and biotech farmers in the Philippines. Meanwhile, my ongoing project engagements focus on rural communities in Japan, Nepal, and the Philippines.

Before focusing on agricultural and behavioral economics, I obtained my B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Development Communication from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB). My research for eight years in UP has produced two dissertations focusing on the youth’s perception of agriculture and the impacts of the biotech ban on Filipino farmers.

During my four-year stay in Japan, I enjoyed harnessing my skills and knowledge by working as a Teaching Fellow, Research Assistant, and Teaching Assistant in several courses being taught at Hiroshima University. I also mentored MS students under the JDS scholarship program and taught the English language to several Japanese students. Recently, I obtained my data analyst certification from Eskwelabs Technology Ventures, Inc. where I learned data visualization in Power BI, data analysis in SQL, and creating dashboards in Google Looker Studio.

Drivers of environmental conservation agriculture and women farmer empowerment in Namobuddha municipality, Nepal

In terms of women empowerment, this study suggests engaging women more in resource-use decision-making (i.e., technology, labor, energy usage, etc.), which could also increase women's ECA continuation. Lastly, this research also found that the lack of knowledge, training, and opportunities remains the primary obstacle to women's engagement in ECA, whereas profitability, better livelihood, and resource availability serve as the main motivators. Sado Island in Niigata prefecture, Japan is one of the first Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) among developed countries and has since been involved in environmental conservation agriculture (ECA). Farmer perspectives are relevant for understanding agricultural issues and formulating policies. In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional survey on 70 Filipino farmers (i.e., 35 organic and 35 biotech) to understand farmers’ perspectives regarding coexisting farming methods. Leveraging Japanese Sado Island Farmers' GIAHS Inclusivity by Understanding Their Perceived Involvement

Farmers who feel that the GIAHS does not promote youth involvement, Sado Island branding, and tourism management have a higher predisposition to perceive themselves as uninvolved towards the GIAHS. This study highlights the need for careful reevaluation and integration of farmer insights and needs into the current GIAHS implementation in Sado Island and in other GIAHS as well. Read more

Critical factors influencing biotech corn adoption of farmers in the Philippines in relation with the 2015 GMO Supreme Court ban

This study investigated 21 factors influencing biotech corn adoption of 111 corn farmers in Pampanga, Philippines, in relation with the 2015 GMO Supreme Court ban. Results of the statistical tests using ordinal logistic regression and thematic analyses showed that four factors were prioritized by the farmers over the rest of the available influential factors regarding their crop adoption decision making process.
